The proclamation of World Polio Day and the flag-raising ceremony involve local officials and Rotary members like past Rotary International Vice-President Dr. Bob Scott. Origin: World Polio Day is observed on October 24, the birthday of Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the first effective polio vaccine. Organizers: It was established by Rotary International, one of the founders of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Progress: Since the initiative's start in 1988, polio cases have decreased by 99.9%. The disease is now endemic in only two countries. First, it is held at the week’s end — at noon on Friday — at the Best Western Plus, providing a relaxing opportunity for Rotarians to gather together, chat, and enjoy a tasty lunch. Not only is a Rotary meeting a fun place to be, it’s also educational. The Program Committee ensures we have an interesting and entertaining Guest Speaker every week. Rotarians from all over are welcome to our meetings at any time and we are also joined by guests almost every week. We need to know who is coming to prepare an appropriate amount of lunch. If you are a Guest or a Visiting Rotarian, please email and let us know if you are having lunch.
Rotarians gather at noon, and the meeting starts promptly at 12:30. It is also promptly finished by 1:30 pm, for those needing to get back to work. |
